My Interesting Sounds

I took my sound walk on one of the first beautiful sunny days we’ve had since fall (in mid February) and it turned out to be a success. I walked in the spiral pattern I described in my earlier blog and used a minidisk recorder and homemade microphones to capture these sounds.
Sound 1-Snowmobile

Besides getting soaking wet feet from all of the melting snow and rivers of water running down the sidewalk, it turned out to be a very enjoyable walk. I started out at the corner of North Ave. and Humboldt Ave. I walked on Humboldt headed north until I reached locust. I turned left and walked only a few blocks before I heard a snowmobile being worked on before it had to be put away for the winter. It started outside and was pulled into a garage I walked past and picked up a strange echoey noise on this clip from the sound of the motor running reverberating off the walls.

Sound 2-Traffic and Water

I walked further along Locust before I heard anything else interesting. There were quite a few cars driving past, which is what I heard most of the time since I decided to do my walk in a part of town with busy streets. It wasn’t until later in my walk that I got away from the busy streets and headed toward a more residential area. In this clip I was actually trying to capture the sound of the snow melting and the water running off the roof of a house nearby. You can hear that toward the middle but most of what is heard was the cars speeding past, which I thought would contribute to the actuality of my experience on this sound walk.

Sound 3-Kids

I turned left on Martin Luther King Blvd. and continued on my walk following the path on my area map. I walked quite a ways before hearing anything attention-grabbing. On the corner of 1st Avenue and Center St. I stopped for a little while to listen to some children playing in a back yard. In the beginning of this clip you can even hear a baby playing and cooing with her dad. It reminded me of when I was a kid and my brother and I would get so excited to play outside in the sunshine again after the long Wisconsin weather. By this time my feet were completely soaked but I decided to continue anyway, telling myself it would be worth it in the end.

Sound 4-Birds

A few blocks later after turning onto Meinecke St, I stopped to pick up the sounds of a few men doing some construction on a house. Instead I found a few birds (cardinals I think) in a tree not far from me, calling to each other. I thought this was wonderful and a sure sign that spring is not far off. This clip is a reminder of all the beautiful sunny days in our near future that I just cannot wait for! After catching this on tape I was so glad I hadn’t called it a day early.

Sound 5-Sewer Drain

Not long before the end of my walk, on Center street, between Pierce and Richards, I heard a river of all the melting snow flowing right into a sewer drain on the ground. Check out the map. It had the same echo effect the snowmobile had in the garage and I found this fascinating. In this clip I stood on the grass holding my microphones first further away from the drain and then right up next to it, to see the difference distance would make on the sound of the water.

Overall my walk was very enjoyable that afternoon, besides the sopping wet shoes and two big blisters on my feet, I actually had a little bit of fun with it. I heard a lot of sounds I would otherwise take for granted and it gave me a little bit more appreciation for everything around me. So often I walk down the street in my own little world with headphones on my ears and a quick pace to reach my destination. For once I had nothing else I had to hurry for or music blaring, and I just kind of absorbed my surroundings and took in all the little things.
